Connecting art and science to reduce caracal mortalities
One of our ongoing collaborations is with an amazing local Cape Town artist, Bryan Little. Through a project called “Public Displays of Reflection” and the eARTh Agency, reflective artworks are created to raise awareness for Cape Town’s caracals. Each of these beautiful artworks is placed in one of 8 caracal roadkill “hotspots” identified using the mortality data we have collected over the last nine years (see map below). These artworks demarcate areas of high caracal road-crossing activity and also memorialise caracals fatally hit by cars in those locations. If you see one, remember to reduce speed and look out for wildlife!
